Newport News, Va. police and firefighters may have started their own fire

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Newport News Police and Fire crews training at an abandoned building may have sparked a fire early Friday morning. The SWAT team was training with explosive devices Thursday night at the building next to the new Police Headquarters on Jefferson Avenue. Hours after they left, the place went up in flames.

Neighbors like Billy Smith thought the fire was part of the training. “At first I didn’t know if it was training or the real thing. Last night the SWAT team was using smoke bombs and explosive bombs in there. Blowing things up. Then they left, and a few hours later place caught on fire.”

Shaun Caudle lives across the street “I figured the Fire Department was training too. Like they set it on fire on purpose, last minute training before they tear it down.
