RIO RANCHO, N.M. — Seven Rio Rancho Fire Rescue members had their heads shaved Sunday in honor of 4-year-old Brian Gonzales, who was diagnosed with cancer almost 18 months ago.

Earlier this month, the department gave Brian a tour of the fire station on Southern Boulevard, along with a ride in a fire truck.

On Sunday, the Rio Rancho firefighters took part in the St. Baldrick’s fundraiser to help battle childhood cancer.

The event at O’Niell’s Pub in Albuquerque was sponsored by the Albuquerque Area Firefighters.

Other participating agencies included the fire departments of Bernalillo County, Albuquerque and Santa Fe.

Rio Rancho Fire Rescue raised about $2,800 for the event, exceeding its goal of $1,500, according to department spokesman Paul Bearce.

Sunday’s event brought in more than $22,000, he said. St. Baldrick’s raised $13 million nationwide last year to help battle children’s cancer.
