A Menands, N.Y., Fire Department volunteer firefighter was killed and two others were injured last night while responding to a motorcycle accident on Interstate 787.
Edgar Scott, 75, and two other fire police officers were heading to the scene of the crash, south of Exit 6, when their vehicle collided with a propane tanker about 1700 hours.
Scott, a longtime volunteer in the village, was killed. The other fire police officers were taken to Albany Memorial Hospital, where their conditions are not known, but are not reported to be life threatening.
State Police are investigating the crash, which delayed traffic on I-787. The firefighters went to the highway after a motorcycle collided with a car around 4:50 p.m. One person involved in the crash was taken to Albany Memorial with minor injuries.

MENANDS, N.Y. — A veteran of the Menands Fire Department was killed and two others injured Tuesday after responding to a motorcycle accident on Interstate 787. Edgar Scott, 75, a captain in the volunteer service, had been dispatched to a crash, south of Exit 6 on the northbound lanes, when his vehicle collided with a propane tanker at about 5:07 p.m., Menands police said.
Scott died in the accident. The other fire police officers were taken to Albany Memorial Hospital, where their conditions were not life-threatening, police said. Their names were not available.
No information was available on the driver of the propane tanker.
Scott’s duties included placing cones and diverting traffic from accident scenes, said his son, Craig Scott of Watervliet.
He believed that’s what his father planned to do at the scene of the motorcycle crash, in which police reported no serious injuries.
“He died doing what he loved,” said Craig Scott, a former volunteer with the Menands Fire Department. “He was very passionate about helping people.”
Edgar Scott, an Albany native and former insurance salesman, retired as president of the former E.B. Cantine Insurance Co. in 1996, but had been active with the fire department for decades, his son said.
He said his father was a past department president. “I’m at a loss for words. He was a great father, a great man,” Craig Scott said.
Scott also is survived by his wife of 53 years, Beverly, and another son.
