Officials hunt serial tree arsonist in Texas

The Associated Press

GALVESTON, Texas — Officials on Galveston Island are looking for the culprit in a bizarre palm tree torching spree.

Thirty trees have been set ablaze on the island southeast of Houston since May.

Galveston Fire Marshal Gilbert Robinson says he’s got a “serial tree arsonist” on his hands.

Tree service company owner Greg West is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to charges. He says the trees are the only living thing to survive Hurricane Ike last September.

A conviction for arson carries a possible prison term of two to 20 years and a $10,000 fine.
