ADDINGTON HIGHLANDS TWP., Ontario — Deputy Chief William Salmond of the Addington Highlands (Ontario) Fire Department was killed in a fatal collision Sunday afternoon while responding to an accident on the highway.
Salmond, 65, was responding to the incident in a fire department tanker truck when he lost control of the vehicle at an intersection. Salmond was unable to stop the vehicle and it went through the intersection, struck a parked, unoccupied vehicle and rolled into the east ditch. Salmond was ejected from the vehicle. Reports indicate that the brakes of the apparatus had failed.
He was transported to the Lennox and Addington Couny General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The tanker truck is being held for examination. The investigation is ongoing.
Visitation is at the Maschke Funeral Home, Northbrook, Ontario, on Thursday, August 9 from 7-9pm and Friday, August 10 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. The Funeral Service will take place on Saturday, Aug. 11 at the funeral home. Firefighter assembly will start around 10am, and the funeral will begin at 11am.
