GREENVILLE, Pa. — Greenville firefighter Daniel Miller died Monday, about a week after he was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash in Kentucky.
Miller, 40, of Hermitage, was on his way to visit his parents June 10 and was a few miles from their home when he lost control of his motorcycle near Flemingsburg, Greenville firefighters said.
Miller was not wearing a helmet, Kentucky state police said. He was flown to University of Kentucky Medical Center, Lexington, and suffered multiple facial injuries and bleeding on the brain.
Miller was a Greenville firefighter for about 10 years and his fellow firefighters are coping with his death as well as can be expected.
“He was my partner, he was my friend. He will be greatly missed by all,” Lt. Dale Hightree said.
Public calling hours for Miller are set for 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at David A. Johnson Memorial Chapel on Thiel College’s campus, according to a news release from the firefighter’s union. A memorial service is set for 9:30 a.m. Thursday in the Greenville Area High School auditorium, the release said.
The union said no emergency vehicles should be brought to either service.
Firefighters said they have set up a fund for Miller’s young son and would accept donations to the Greenville Fire Fighter Dan Miller Memorial Fund at the station at 111 East Ave., Greenville. Flowers for Miller should be delivered to that address, the department said.
The fire department was short-handed before Miller was hurt. Firefighters are taking summer vacations and one has an injured ankle and can’t work.
Borough Manager Ryan T. Eggleston said borough officials are working with the fire department on creating a plan to make sure everything is covered, especially in the middle of this tragedy.
“We’re obviously saddened by the loss of Dan,” Eggleston said, adding everyone who met Miller is praying for him and his family.
