READING, Pa. — A scarecrow display on a bulletin board caught fire, setting off a sprinkler and giving nearly 700 Tyson-Schoener Elementary School children an early dismissal while school officials mopped up.
The students and staff left the building when the bulletin board fire set off the alarm about 11 a.m. Wednesday, school officials said.
Reading schools Superintendent Thomas R. Chapman said he was pleased with the effectiveness of the sprinkler and with how effectively the building was cleared.
Chapman said the school would operate normally Thursday.
