Popular Capitol Hill hangout heavily damaged by fire

WASHINGTON - The manager of a popular Capitol Hill hangout hopes to rebuild after a devastating fire.

D.C. firefighters needed only about ten minutes on Wednesday morning to put out the flames at the Capitol Lounge at 231 Pennsylvania Avenue Southeast - but the interior was heavily damaged.

Head chef Michael Holmes tells The Washington Post that the kitchen was ruined, along with the bar’s furniture.

The fire also destroyed most of the decorations, which included soccer scarves from around the world and political memorabilia, especially posters and pins from the Nixon era.

Investigators say the fire was caused by a smoldering cigarette in a trash can and has been ruled accidental.
