NEW YORK — U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (news, bio, voting record) on Monday urged the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to occupy the Freedom Tower, the planned centerpiece for the site at the former World Trade Center, rather than one of the other five new towers at the complex.
Schumer said such a move by the Port Authority would be a symbolic gesture that would help the 82-story tower attract tenants, despite fears the building could become a target for attacks like those that destroyed the twin towers on September 11.
Schumer, a Democrat, said the Port Authority was planning on moving into Tower Three of the complex but should occupy the Freedom Tower.
