PROVO, Utah — Utah County officials say about a dozen Brigham Young University students are suffering from burns after playing with home-made gasoline bombs at a mine shaft.

Utah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Cannon says that the students were in the Tintic mining district near State Route 6 when the accident happened Saturday night or Sunday morning.

He says the students were dropping the makeshift gas bombs down a deep mine shaft when their fuel container accidentally spilled and caught fire, burning the students.

The Daily Herald of Provo reports that Cannon did not know exactly how many people were injured or the extent of the burns, but all were treated at area hospitals.
