KINGSVILLE, Texas — Kingsville’s fire chief plans to retire at the end of the month after 41 years of service.

Alonzo “Al” Lopez started with the Kingsville Fire Department in 1970 as a firefighter and emergency medical technician.

He was promoted to driver in 1973 and shift captain in 1978. He was named interim fire chief in 2005 and was named fire chief later that year.

Lopez served two terms as commissioner for the Texas Commission on Fire Protection.

Before his appointment as fire chief, Lopez served as the union president of the International Association of Firefighters Local 2390 for 30 years.

Capt. Roel Carrion was appointed interim fire chief, effective last Sunday. Carrion has been employed by the Fire Department for 30 years, the past six as shift captain.
