HELOTES, Texas — As specialized fire crews started to lay the groundwork Wednesday for their assault on the mountain of burning mulch in Helotes, the smoke was bad enough to cause air quality problems for at least seven area schools.
With fire crews now planning to begin taking the mound apart and dousing it with water as early as Saturday, according to a state spokesman, the Northside Independent School District is considering whether it will have to close some schools next week.
District officials will meet with the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District this morning for advice.
