NEVADA, Mo. — A fire early Wednesday at a rural home in Vernon County claimed the lives of two children.
Ron Peckman, Vernon County sheriff, said a call was received at 2:22 a.m. reporting a fire at the home of Darren and Cheryl Dennison on U.S. Highway 54 near County Road 1700. The sheriff said the single-story, stone-and-wood house was in flames when firefighters arrived.
Peckman said four children were asleep in the home while their parents were at work. He said a 15-year-old boy and a 9-year-old boy ma naged to escape the burning house. But 11-year-old Amanda Shadden and 5-year-old Coleen Shadden perished in the blaze.
