Welders start blaze at new Utah police station

The Salt Lake Tribune

LOGAN, Utah — A police station under construction in Logan caught fire Wednesday afternoon, spurring a big response from the Logan Fire Department and surrounding agencies.

The fire was ignited by welders working on the second story of a new section of the police station. They were welding near stacked bags of foam insulation when the foam caught fire, according to Logan Fire Chief Mark Meaker.

He said initial reports of the fire compared it to a B-52 bomber crash becaue of the huge amount of smoke, but the damage appears to be mostly cosmetic. The building is made of steel, concrete and brick, so a majority of the materials were not highly flammable.

Meaker said it is unclear how many square feet burned, but the cost of damage to the unfinished building is estimated at about $50,000.

Crews responded quickly and extinguished the fire, said Meaker, adding that the fire station is just two blocks away. Logan has an automatic-aid agreement with North Logan, Smithfield and Cache County - and all responded to the fire. Five engines, a ladder truck, an ambulance, three chiefs and about 30 firefighters helped battle the flames.

The existing Police Department is being transformed into Logan’s new City Hall and crews are adding a 25,000-square-foot police station.
