Zinc factory blaze knocked down in Chicago

The Chicago Tribune

CHICAGO — It took more than 100 firefighters about two hours to put out a blaze that ripped through a Far South Side factory early Monday morning, according to the Chicago Fire Department. No injuries were reported.

The blaze, at the Imperial Zinc Corp., 1031 E. 103rd St., was reported about 12:40 p.m., said Eve Rodriguez, a Fire Department spokeswoman, who also said a hazardous materials response was instituted.

She did not know where the blaze started in the building, but said flames shot up through the roof. The fire was put out shortly after 2:30 a.m.

The cause of the fire was being investigated. The Environmental Protection Agency was not called to the scene, said EPA spokeswoman Maggie Carson, and the Illinois office of OSHA is not investigating the incident, said Department of Labor spokesman Brad Mitchell.
