CRAWFORD, N.Y. -- An arrest has been made in the New Year’s Day fatal stabbing of volunteer firefighter Justin Speights.

New York State Police issued a news release Thursday stating they would be holding a news conference on Friday to discuss the details of the arrest in the Speights case.

Speights, 20, was stabbed at a New Year’s party after he tried to break up a fight between two groups of guests.

Partygoers attempted to revive him but he later died at the hospital.

His mother, Lisa Speights, said at the time that her son was trying to help a friend.

“He was a great kid, quiet, helped anybody out. He was himself at home, fun, jokester,” she said.

Speights graduated two years ago from Pine Bush High School, where he was an honor student and standout football player. He was also a volunteer firefighter with Silver Lake Fire Department.

He joined the department when he was 16.

“Everybody loved him. Everybody took him serious because he took his job very serious as a volunteer firefighter,” firefighter Jeff Jacques said.
