3 of 6 Miss. firefighters indicted in ‘fire cult’ arsons

Investigators found that they were setting the fires and then responding to them when their departments were called

BAY ST. LOUIS, Miss. — A grand jury indicted three former firefighters Tuesday on arson charges after a string of suspicious fires in 2014 and 2015. Three other firefighters were arrested, but not indicted.

Sun Herald reported that those indicted, Crystal Mooneyhan, Michael Smith and Marie Gill, were members of the Clermont Harbor (Miss.) Volunteer Fire Department when the fires occurred. Investigators found that they were setting the fires and then responding to them when their departments were called.

Mooneyhan and Smith face one count of arson and Gill faces first-degree arson, evidence tampering and five counts of arson.

When they were arrested a year ago, officials said the firefighters were part of “some sort of fire club or fire cult,” according to the report.
