MUSKEGON, Mich. — Kenneth Theodore Sumerix has been sentenced to jail, probation and restitution for setting fire to his Fruitland Township home last year, a fire that caused minor burns to two firefighters.

Muskegon County Circuit Judge Timothy G. Hicks on Friday, Aug. 23, ordered Sumerix to serve one year in jail and two years on probation and pay restitution of $35,896.80, as well as fines and costs of $198. Sumerix pleaded no contest July 24 to arson of a dwelling house.

Sumerix, 39, now of Muskegon, was the owner of a home in the 2300 block of Simonelli Road and lived there with his two teenage children at the time of the fire, prosecutors said earlier. No one was home at the time the fire was reported.
