TRENTON, N.J. — It’s a slap in the face. That’s what city firefighters said today as they literally attempted to put the pieces back together of a monument to their fallen brethren that stood for more than 120 years before being inexplicably destroyed in an act of vandalism Sunday morning.

Though police arrested the 28-year-old man they say pushed over, smashed, and decapitated the statue that stood in front of City Hall, replacing the memorial dedicated to firefighters killed in the line of duty will cost thousands of dollars, fire union president Wayne Wolk said today

“Having that done is a slap in the face,” he said. “It’s unacceptable. We have less and less respect for anything these days.”
