FDNY firefighters catch mugging suspect

3 firefighters chased suspect after he robbed, assaulted 15-year-old girl, pinned him to fence until police arrived

NEW YORK — Three FDNY firefighters nabbed a suspected mugger after he robbed and assaulted a 15-year-old girl on Sunday.

Firefighters Ronny Fuentes, John Hessler and Chris Magnata were responding to a carbon monoxide incident in the area when they received the call about the mugging, according to 1010 WINS.

Firefighters Hessler and Fuentes said they got out of their truck to ask the mugger where he was going, according to The New York Post. Then they chased the suspect and pinned him to a fence until police arrived.

City Councilman James Vacca awarded the firefighters with a certificate of appreciation on Monday, saying the firefighters went “above and beyond the call of duty.”

“It was an unusual thing for us to do but I guess we were just in the right place at the right time,” Fuentes said. “It’s something we don’t usually have to worry about but at the time we were just reacting.”
