NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. — A girl who fell into a fire pit Saturday morning and was burned was doing better Sunday, May 20, the Orange County Fire Authority said in a tweet.
Charlotte Chapin, 10, fell headfirst into the pit, with her hands and head inside the steel drum and her waist touching the side, during a father-and-daughter campout at Newport Dunes, according to the OCFA.
Off-duty Orange County Fire Authority firefighter Mike Heddleston was at the YMCA-sponsored camping trip with his daughter when Charlotte fell halfway into the steel fire pit shortly before 10 a.m., OCFA Capt. Steve Concialdi said.

The off-duty firefighter grabbed a bottle of water, wrapped the girl up in a towel and warned the other girl’s father not to put ice on the burns.
“We want to cool burns with clean water and we never want ice,” Concialdi said of the way to treat burn victims. “Keep the patient warm and get medical assistance immediately.”
He said Charlotte was being treated at the Orange County Burn Center at Orange County Global Medical Center.
“The family would like to thank Newport Beach Fire, (firefighter) Mike & the staff at OC Global Burn Center for the great care she received. She is doing much better & is hoping to go home today,” the OCFA said in a tweet Sunday.
Charlotte, who was treated by Newport Beach fire crews and paramedics before being sent to the hospital, suffered first- and second-degree burns to her hip, ribs and wrist, and singed her hair, Concialdi said.
