JUSTICE, Ill. — A Roberts Park Fire Protection District firefighter was in critical condition in the burn unit at Loyola University Medical Center after a fire Wednesday in Justice.

A spokeswoman for the hospital confirmed the firefighter is being treated in the intensive care unit.

Firefighters with the district were at the scene battling a house fire in Justice.

George Thomas, the owner of the home in the 8000 block of West Fawn Trail, said he was not at the house at the time of the incident but that his wife and their two dogs were.

Thomas, who owns a painting and interior decorating business, said he was on a job when the fire started, and his wife called him at about 10 a.m.

The fire started in a downstair’s recreation room “and just shot up (stairs),” he said.

Thomas said he later learned that someone had been injured battling the fire.

“I hope he’s all right,” Thomas said.

No additional details about the fire or the firefighter’s injuries were immediately available.
