7-year-old honorary firefighter loses cancer battle

WASHINGTON TWP., N.J. — Aiden Riebel, the 7-year-old who inspired many and was named an honorary firefighter in fire departments across the world, died Wednesday, a Facebook page in his honor announced.

Aiden, who was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia at the age of 1, always wanted to be a firefighter. He was named an honorary firefighter for his hometown of Washington Township in 2013, and recently, as his condition began to worsen, a campaign began to get his name on the roster of fire departments around the world.

His name was put on shift boards, helmets and jackets, as well as helmets and vehicles from New York City to Kodiak, Alaska. Aiden also received packages from fire departments in Australia and was on the shift list at the Baan fire station in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
