SOUTH FORT MYERS, Fla. — South Trail firefighter and paramedic Danielle DiBenedetto died Saturday after bravely been fighting colon cancer since December, 2013.
DiBenedetto died in hospice care at Hope Hospice Saturday evening. Chief William Lombardo said she has been with his department for nearly two decades. Fox 4 interviewed him Friday, just one day before her death.
“She has been my hero absolutely through it all. She has battled this courageously and relentlessly,” Lombardo said. Lombardo said firefighters had been holding vigils every night, praying for Danielle and her family.
