MAUI, Hawaii — After battling cancer for nearly half of his life, 3-year-old honorary FDNY firefighter Trucker Dukes died Friday.

Trucker was diagnosed with neuroblastoma when he was 19 months old; he has went through numerous rounds of chemotherapy, and frequently traveled to New York for treatment.

During one of his visits to New York, he met FDNY Capt. Jim Grismer, and the two formed an immediate bond. Trucker became an honorary FDNY firefighter May 2016.

“We all have an opportunity tomorrow when we wake up to go on continuing life as it has been, or we have an opportunity to wake up and live a life in honor of someone who fought super hard, who loved well, who encouraged people, who had faith and that’s how I want to live,” Trucker’s father, Ua Dukes said.

Trucker’s family is requesting that firefighters across the country add him to their riding assignment list, take a photo of the board, and share it on social media with the hashtag #TruckerRidesWithUs.
