WALLINGTON, N.J. — The family of a volunteer firefighter who died in March after falling off the roof of a burning restaurant suffered another loss Saturday with the death of the firefighter’s grown son.
John Barnas, in his early 20s, died of complications from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma Saturday afternoon, just months after he and his brother Kevin, both volunteers in the borough department, helped battle the blaze that killed their father, Gregory, Fire Commissioner Mark Tomko said.
“They’ve gone through so much,” Tomko said of the Barnas family. “Good people like them don’t deserve this. It’s a shame, and the whole department is so distraught over what he went through.” Greg Barnas had been donating blood cells for his son’s treatment and John Barnas, who was 23 at the time, underwent a treatment at Hackensack University Medical Center the afternoon after his father died.
