VERNON, Calif. — A six-year-old boy’s dreams came true Thursday thanks to a local fire department.

KTLA.com reported that Steven Pulido ran drills, wore custom-made firefighter gear and even put out a fire. Pulido was diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD) and childhood cerebral ALD shortly after he was born.

The rare genetic disorder destroys the protective covering surrounding the brain’s nerve cells, according to the report. His mother said the disease will eventually leave him in a vegetative state.

Vernon firefighters honored him with a plaque as part of his special day.
