DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — A fire captain is being called a hero after catching a baby who was thrown out of a burning apartment complex.

FOX5 reported that Captain Jackie Peckrul responded to a fire on January 3 at the Avondale Forest Apartments and began helping rescue residents, including eight children.

Captain Peckrul grabbed a ladder to reach the Ragland family, but the frantic parents wrapped their baby in a blanket and threw the child out of the third-floor window.

“That was the only thing running through my mind ... ‘Lord, let me catch this baby,’” Captain Peckrul said. “My hands came off the ladder and I got ’em.”

Captian Peckrul gave the baby to an EMS crew before helping the rest of the family to safety. Her colleague, Captain Scott Stroup, caught an older sibling of the family who was also thrown to safety.

“There’s no better feeling in the world,” Peckrul said. “Never want to see any parent lose a child.”
