ANTELOPE, Calif. — A firefighter escaped serious injury when a roof collapsed during a fire Monday.

Crews were battling a house fire when a portion of the roof collapsed. One firefighter was struck by falling debris and transported to the hospital.

“Fortunately, debris that fell on him was basic lumber material, and we were able to lift that off of him and then pull him further down the driveway,” Sacramento Metro Fire Capt. Chris Vestal told KCRA.

Capt. Vestal said there are usually signs that alert firefighters of potential dangers or roof collapses.

“We look for changing conditions in the smoke pattern,” Capt. Vestal said. “Often times, different colors of smoke can mean different fire conditions and different types of material being burned.”

Fire officials said the video will help them better understand the structure collapse.

“To be able to see that from the starting phase of the fire through the event until complete suppression ... that’s rare, very rare,” Capt. Vestal said.
