PLAINVILLE, Mass. — A 23-year-old Plainville firefighter is fighting for his life after contracting COVID-19, and is now in a medically induced coma, according to the Plainville Fire Department.

“Plainville Fire Department asks you to keep FF Brett Bertram in your thoughts and prayers,” the department said on Facebook last week. “Brett is a member of our Call Department and is now in a medically induced coma due to a battle with COVID-19.”

A GoFundMe set up in Bertram’s name has raised over $18,000 as of Monday. According Stacy Bertram, Bertram’s mother, Bertram is an EMT who has built a career around helping others in their time of need.

“Keeping prayers up for Brett, his family, friends and loved ones. Brett recently came down with COVID-19 and since being hospitalized, he’s been put into a medically induced coma, and placed on a ventilator,” she wrote on the GoFundMe.

Funds from the GoFundMe will be used to ease some of the medical expenses facing Bertram and his family while he fights the infection.
