JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Criminal charges have been dropped against a 25-year-old Jacksonville firefighter who was accused of having sex in Davie with a 16-year-old girl he met through Facebook.
Prosecutors announced Tuesday that they would not press charges against Ladarius Lane-Berry, who was arrested in April. Information on their reasoning was not available as of late Wednesday. Defense lawyer Johnny McCray said it was a case with questionable evidence.
“Any time they don’t go forward with a case, it’s because prosecutors don’t think they can get a conviction,” he said.
The girl made the allegations in late April. She told investigators she met Lane-Berry in person in May 2015 and that he forced her to have sex with him in a separate incident in March 2016. Lane-Berry denied the accusations.
Lane-Berry grew up in South Florida and graduated from Boyd H. Anderson High School in Lauderdale Lakes in 2008, according to court testimony.
