Firefighters on high alert after several UK floods

After heavy rain and flooding, firefighters saved two people stranded in car

Western Morning News

DEVON, England —Heavy rain across the Westcountry over the weekend sparked patches of localised flooding. Met Office chiefs had issued severe weather warnings as storm fronts swept over the region causing floods in spots across Cornwall and Devon.

Yesterday at around 1.50pm fire crews were out in the Chudleigh and Kingsteignton area of Devon after receiving numerous calls about flood water seeping into homes. Fire chiefs said teams were out helping residents wherever possible.

Flash floods also hit Launceston, North Cornwall, yesterday.

At around 6pm on Saturday flooding broke out at Bideford and Holsworthy.

Crews said they had to prioritise calls for flooding inside houses and were doing their best to help residents pump out water.

Later at around 7.45pm firefighters were at the A3072, Redpost, Bude, north Cornwall, responding to a call a car was trapped in flood water on the main road from Bude to Holsworthy.

Two people were stuck inside the car in around a foot of flood water.

Six firefighters pushed the car out of the water.

Highways crews were then asked to attend to clean-up the road while firefighters used a light portable pump to remove water from the road.

They also located and unblocked a culvert.

A spokesman for the Met Office said the amber weather warning was in place until 10pm last night and no warning were so far in place over the next three days.

He said: “We saw slow moving, torrential downpours with some of them thundery with hail and strong winds.

“By Monday there will be plenty of dry weather with sunny spells and a scattering of showers, these generally lighter than on Sunday, with some western coasts becoming mostly dry and fine.” Maximum temperatures will be 19 degrees Celsius.

Early on today mist or fog patches with scattered showers were expected over higher ground including Exmoor and Dartmoor before sunny spells kick in.
