La. firefighters call for reinforcements for Hurricane Isaac

Fire director says the extreme weather will keep firefighters busier than normal

NEW ORLEANS, La. — In anticipation of Hurricane Isaac, a La. fire director has called in his second platoon for extra staffing.

The second wave of firefighters will join the other crews at their stations while East Bank Consolidated Fire Director Joe Greco supervises, according to Nola.com.

High winds, flooding and power outages are expected to keep firefighters busy, as well as fires accidentally caused by candles and battery-operated lighting, Greco said.

With the extreme weather that Isaac is bringing, firefighters will also have larger scale incidents to deal with like gas leaks, fallen trees, and broken power lines.

Greco said firefighters will stop responding to emergency calls once winds reach 50 miles per hour or more for their own safety.
