Conn. house explosion injures 6 firefighters

WATERBURY, Conn. — An explosion lifted a roof at a home in Waterbury and sent six firefighters to the hospital on Thursday morning.

Firefighters were called to a reported garage fire in the 700 block of Pearl Lake Road shortly after 8:30 a.m. However, the fire quickly spread to the residence. Upon arrival, firefighters found bright orange flames and thick black smoke swallowing up the garage. “We just saw smoke and no one was stopping,” Alyssa Espinal, of Waterbury, said. “We pulled into the driveway and see the flames, the car on fire, the back.”

Waterbury Fire Chief David Martin said when emergency crews arrived, firefighters were in the front of the house trying to get in when an explosion sent one firefighter flying back 10 feet.
