SAN ANTONIO — A firefighter was honored at a vigil after dying in a four-alarm fire at a shopping center.
My San Antonio reported that firefighter Scott Deem’s father, Roy Hernandez, joined a group of about 300 people in front of the Alamo to honor his son.
“He was always smiling, laughing. He was always a happy one since he was a little boy,” Hernandez said. “He was the pick-me-up of the family.”
A colleague who graduated with Deem from the fire academy said he never quit.
“He always gave 110 percent and we were just trying to keep up with him,” colleague Dana Zamarripa said. “He was a go-getter, he loved his job and there was never a doubt in my mind for one second how much he loved his job.”
Deem was a six-year veteran and a father of two children, with a third on the way.
