WICHITA, Kan. — Hundreds of firefighters gathered Wednesday to mourn the death of a firefighter who died unexpectedly last week.

Funeral services were held for firefighter Collis Grisby, 53, who died Jan. 25. He joined the fire service in 1993.

Colleagues said Grisby was well-known and respected throughout the department.

“He wasn’t interested in moving up into an officer, he just wanted to be a really good firefighter and he was,” Wichita Fire Capt. Tony Heard told KWCH. “He mentored a lot of younger firefighters over the years, he knew every aspect of the job, but the biggest thing about him was his heart.”
