HOUSTON — The mother of a young firefighter who died in the Southwest Inn blaze in 2013 reflected on the death of William “Iron Bill” Dowling.
Mary Sullivan’s daughter, Anne, was a rookie firefighter when she was killed in the fire four years ago. Following the death of Houston Fire Capt. William “Iron Bill” Dowling, Sullivan said he served as a strong role model, and will leave a lasting legacy.
“To see Bill fighting, it’s like the fire hasn’t completely won,” Sullivan told KHOU. “He survived it and was still fighting for his life.”
The fire left Capt. Dowling permanently disabled and unable to speak. Sullivan said Capt. Dowling’s survival and presence was comforting in dealing with the loss of her daughter.
“The incredible strength and bravery he showed as he and his family rebuilt his life – and theirs – after his injuries inspired us all. Please keep the Dowling family and all of the men and women of our fire department in your prayers,” wrote the Houston Fire Department regarding Capt. Dowling’s death.
