Toddler dead in mobile home fire, mother hospitalized

NEW CHICAGO, Ind. — A 2-year-old child died in a mobile home fire and the mother was found by firefighters in a back bedroom and airlifted to a nearby hospital.

First responders responded to a fire that began in one trailer at the Ravinia Pines mobile home park and spread to two units on either side, NWI.com reported.

A deceased toddler was found in one of the units, and the mother was airlifted to the University of Chicago Medical Center.

New Chicago firefighters were joined by personnel from Hobart, Lake Station, Portage, South Haven, Merrillville and Lake Ridge.

Witnesses reported hearing an explosion, but Indiana State Fire Marshal investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
