KALAMAZOO, Mich. — An arrest warrant was issued against a driver involved in a crash that killed a fire chief.

WWMT reported that Brandon Clevenger’s car data recorder showed that he was driving at speeds as high as 90 mph before losing control and crashing into a barrier at 87 mph, hitting Comstock Fire Chief Ed Switalski and killing him.

Police also said they discovered Clevenger was using his phone before the crash, according to an analysis.

“That night while out there looking at the men and women involved in the emergency services, the fire services, and the law enforcement all recognizing that a brother had fallen, it is something that comes to light once in a while in our investigations that we realize how real this is for us,” Sheriff Richard Fuller said.

A warrant was issued against Clevenger for reckless driving causing death. Police said he is cooperating and is expected to turn himself in.
