COSTA MESA, Calif. — A fire captain died today after being struck by an alleged DUI driver.
KTLA reported that Costa Mesa Fire & Rescue Captain Mike Kreza, an 18-year veteran of the department, was training for a triathlon on his bicycle Saturday when he was struck by the driver of a van.
Kreza was rushed to the hospital, where he remained in critical condition until he died.
“Words alone cannot describe the immeasurable heartache felt by his friends & family, including his fire family,” a fire department tweet read.
Stephen Taylor Scarpa, the driver of the van, was evaluated at the scene of the crash for a DUI. He appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance, and police said they found multiple prescription medications in the vehicle. He was arrested and booked into jail.
A GoFundMe has been launched to raise money for the Kreza family. Over $75,000 has been raised so far.
