SOUTH SHORE, Ky. — Family, friends, fellow firefighters, and members of law enforcement gathered at the South Shore Fire Department on Wednesday to bid farewell and pay their respects to Zachary Diller, 20, a member of the South Shore Volunteer Fire Department who was tragically killed in a car accident on Saturday.
Diller was following in a family lineage of firefighters at the SSFD. His father is Kevin Diller, who currently serves as a lieutenant for the SSFD, and his grandfather, Jerry Diller, is a firefighter who currently serves at the department.
Charles Farley, assistant fire chief of the SSFD, said they desired to show their respects to Diller for his service to the department and community.
“Zachary Kevin Diller was a member of the South Shore Volunteer Fire Department. He is a third generation fireman, He has been a member for a little over two years,” Farley said. “He’d just gotten certified as a firefighter, and was unfortunately killed in an auto accident on Saturday evening in Carter County. What we are going to do here today is have a fireman’s funeral and pay our respects as firemen for the service that he (Diller) provided to the community.”
According to Farley, on Saturday, Diller was traveling on KY 474 in Carter County, Ky. with Abraham Dummitt, 24, of Garrison, Ky. Farley said according to reports from law enforcement, Dummitt lost control of the vehicle, after which the vehicle went off of the road, hitting a tree, claiming the lives of Diller and Dummitt.
“You can see the fire trucks that are all lining up from the different fire departments that are here to pay their respect too,” he said. “Also, when the funeral procession leaves, upon US 23 there will be some cross ladders with a flag, some aerial fire trucks and they’ll have flag suspended from it, and the funeral procession will all drive underneath it as we lay him to rest at the Siloam Cemetery.”
Farley said Diller will be greatly missed by members of the SSFD, and community at large.
