MAITLAND, Fla. — Interstate 4 is back open after being closed for several hours following a fiery crash that left one man dead this morning, the Maitland Police Department said.
The driver slammed into an I-4 sign near exit 90-A around 6:30 a.m. and burst into flames, Maitland police Lt. Louis Grindle said
Grindle said when police and firefighters arrived, the vehicle was completely engulfed.
They found one man dead inside.
“The damage was so extensive to the vehicle there was no possible way to identify the driver or what kind of vehicle it was,” Grindle said.
Grindle said witnesses told authorities the man was speeding through the area before he struck the sign.
The Department of Transportation was called to check the sign pillar and see if it was structurally sound before the interstate was reopened.
The exit ramp for Maitland Boulevard is still closed off for the investigation, but Grindle said it should be reopening soon.
