CALGARY, Canada — The Calgary firefighter who lost his life in a B.C. lake had been drinking and wasn’t wearing a life-jacket, Mounties say.

Two-year firefighter Ryan Bjolverud, the son of assistant deputy fire chief Glenn Bjolverud, was found dead in Columbia Lake near Fairmont Hot Springs Sunday after an early morning fishing trip took a tragic turn.

Invermere RCMP Cpl. Grant Simpson said the 32-year-old and a friend took a canoe out on the shallow lake at 4 a.m. “He and a friend decided to go fishing aboard a canoe and paddled out a ways,” he said, noting they were about 200 metres from the shore.
