Former firefighter-turned-cop dies in single-vehicle crash

NORTON SHORES, Mich. — An officer has died from injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash.

Officer Jon Ginka, 34, was in his patrol cruiser when it veered off the road and struck a tree, WOOD News reported.

Firefighters freed Ginka from the wreckage. He was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The 10-year veteran leaves behind his wife and two children. According to North Muskegon Fire Department’s Facebook, Ginka was a former firefighter.

“Jonathan loved serving this community. He continues to serve today by donating his organs to those who need them,” Police Chief Jon Gale said. “He was a highly-decorated veteran and will truly be missed.”

An investigation is ongoing into the cause of the crash.
