GRIFTON, N.C. — Hugo volunteer firefighter Prentice “Jay” Tyndall, 45, who died May 12 after suffering from a brain bleed, has been classified as a line-of-duty death.
Tyndall was responding to a mutual aid fire call with the North Lenoir Fire Department, and was driving an engine enroute when the call was cancelled May 8. About 12 hours later, he became ill.
Tyndall told his wife he was having severe head pain and asked the business where he was visiting to call 911; he was transported to a hospital. A CT scan was performed at the hospital, where an aneurysm was discovered.
Tyndall was then transferred to another hospital where he had brain surgery. He died of his injury May 12.
He worked for the Hugo Fire Department for two years.
