WINTHROP, N.Y. — A firefighter died Saturday after returning home from battling a blaze.
Watertown Daily Times reported that Brasher-Winthrop Volunteer Fire Department firefighter-operator David Carr, 62, responded to a fire at Curran Renewable Energy and was involved in ground operations until the department was released from the scene, according to BWVFD president Randy Thayer.
Carr went to the station to put up equipment before going home, where he collapsed later that morning.
“He just did things the right way. He was a very solid, dependable part of our department,” Thayer said. “He was here all the time. If we needed a truck worked on or to find out what was wrong with a piece of equipment, you did not have to tell him twice, he just did it. He would always have some of the younger guys with him and that is how they learned. They learned from him.”
A Facebook post from the department said that Carr was a member of the fire department since 1998, as well as a highly active member and former chief of the Tri-Town Volunteer Rescue Squad.
