SILSBEE, Texas — A 25-year veteran volunteer firefighter was struck and killed by a vehicle while working a crash scene Wednesday.
KFDM reported that the Silsbee volunteer firefighter Jay Hinkie was doing traffic control when a vehicle struck him. Hinkie was rushed to the hospital, where he died of his injuries.
“Working an accident scene is always precarious,” Hardin County Sheriff Mark Davis said. “You rely on help from first responders and volunteers. They play such a critical role in our community. A majority of our first responders are volunteers. They’re truly public servants. They want to give back to their community. Working car crashes and house fires is dangerous. Bad things can happen. All first responders share the common goal: compassion for their community. They care for the people they live and work among. And they want to help their fellow man in a time of need.”
