SASABE, Ariz. — A veteran fire corps crewmember died June 6 just before finishing a wildland firefighter test.
The U.S. Fire Administration reported that firefighter Ian Haxton, 31, suffered a medical emergency and collapsed 200 yards from the finish line. Medical care was immediately rendered by emergency medical responders who were staged on-site for the test. Firefighter Haxton was transported to a care facility, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
At the time of the fatal incident, he was preparing for a series of prescribed burns, according to the report.
The cause of his death has not yet been determined and funeral arrangements are pending.
