National firefighting educator dies unexpectedly

GETTYSBURG, Pa. — A long-time U.S. Fire Administration educator died unexpectedly Wednesday.

Dr. Cortez Lawrence was transported to the hospital after falling ill, where he later died, according to FirefighterCloseCalls.com.

Dr. Lawrence, a fire educator specialist, has worked at numerous public safety and fire organizations. He served as the director of the national fire programs at USFA and as the superintendent at FEMA’s Emergency Management Institute. He was also involved with fire service accreditation programs with the Center for Public Safety Excellence.

Dr. Lawrence, an Army veteran, also served in fire services in Alabama and Washington D.C.
