HOPKINS COUNTY, Ky. — An off-duty volunteer firefighter was killed Sunday in a farming accident.
14News reported that Charleston (Ky.) firefighter Mark Harmon, 54, was using a tractor to pull a log up a hill near his home when the tractor flipped and killed him.
“It’s just devastating when we lose a fellow firefighter,” said firefighter and deputy coroner James Miller. “It’s always very devastating. We were actually getting fitted for new turnout gear the other day. He was having fun, we were trying different sizes and he was making jokes. He was always making jokes and always just a funny guy to hang out with.”
Fire Chief Ralph Ahlert said Harmon had been a volunteer firefighter on the department for over three years and helped any way he could.
“Mark was a great guy,” Chief Ahlert said. “He would do anything he could do for you. Other than that he is going to be well missed … he is.”
Harmon’s funeral service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Harris Funeral Home chapel in Madisonville.
